Winepress of the Wrath of God

Another event that occurs on the Last Day is the treading of the winepress of the wrath of God by Jesus Christ (Rev 14:19-20, Rev 19:15-16). This is symbolism for the judgment that occurs on the Last Day, when Jesus Christ comes to judge the world. The shedding of blood is required to reconcile for sins. Blood represents the location of a person’s soul (Lev 17:11). The shedding of blood (the loss of one’s soul) is required due to the wrath of God that results from committing sins.  Only blood can satisfy the wrath of God. Those who are not God’s people must have their souls shed forever to appease the wrath of God. However, those who are God’s people are saved from the wrath of God (Ro 5:9).

The winepress of God’s wrath symbolizes the treading down of unsaved people resulting in the shedding of their blood for their sins. The soul of a person is in their blood and therefore, this event symbolizes the loss of life (soul). The soul of the unsaved person is destroyed on Judgment Day (Mat 10:28) and their spirit is doomed to an eternity in outer darkness and separation from God. Therefore, the destruction of one’s soul results in not being able to dwell with God in the new heavens and the new earth for eternity.

Saved from the Wrath of God

The following passages underscore the importance of salvation and what a person needs to be saved from.

  • Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. (Rom 5:9)
  • Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. (1Th 2:16)
  • For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,  (1Th 5:9)
  • And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.  (1Th 1:10)

Many do not understand the need for salvation. Some people salvation is just being saved from ourselves or our circumstances. This is not true.  Salvation means to be rescued from the impending doom of the wrath of God (Ro 5:9).

Wrath due to Sin

It is also important to understand that God’s wrath comes on people due to sins. The following verses make this clear:

  • For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;  (Rom 1:18)
  • But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;  (Rom 2:5)
  • But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,  (Rom 2:8)
  • Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.  (Rom 4:15)
  • What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:  (Rom 9:22)
  • For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.  (Rom 13:4)
  • Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.  (Eph 2:3)
  • But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. (Eph 5:3-6)
  • For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: (Col 3:6)
  • But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?  (Mat 3:7)
  • Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?  (Luk 3:7)
  • But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.  (Luk 21:23)
  • He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.  (Joh 3:36)

Wrath of God

The wrath of God is used in the New Testament by virtue of two Greek words (thumos and orge). Thumos points to the passion of God (emotional), while orge points to the logical anger of God. Both point to the fact that there must be consequences for sin. Please consider the following study notes:

Wine

Wine is used in the Bible as a symbol for blood. Blood is that which contains the soul (life), Lev 17:11.  Wine is used in a positive sense as referring to the blood of Christ in the Lord’s Supper (see below for references).  In a negative sense, wine refers to winepress of God’s wrath, which results in the pouring out of blood (souls) in judgment.

  • Wine symbolizes blood:
    • And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. Blood

The Blood is what contains the soul (Lev 17:11-14). The soul is that which is in connection with the creation (whether the present creation or the new heavens and the new earth in eternity. Reconciliation requires the shedding of blood. One is either reconciled to God by the blood of Jesus Christ (the pouring out of His soul for our sins) or if not, one’s blood will be required on Judgment Day. That is, the soul is shed (destroyed) on Judgment Day (Mat 20:28).

Winepress

A winepress is the place of treading down of grapes in order to make wine.  This portrait is used in prophecy to describe what happens on the Last Day, which is judgment day. Wine is a symbol of blood, which is where the soul / life resides symbolically. Treading down means to place under the feet. On the Last Day, Jesus Christ comes as the Judge and the executor of justice. All things are placed under His feet, which is a symbol for under His subjection. On the Last Day, judgment is given to Jesus Christ. All unsaved people are put under the subjection of Christ (i.e., tread down) to receive the fierceness of His wrath on the Last Day. See below for references study notes for Bible references:

Tread Down:

  • The feet of Christ is where all things are placed under subjection (Rev 1:17, Eph 1:22, Is 60:14, Heb 1:13, 2:8, 1 Cor 15:27, Dan 8:17-18, Dan 10:9-15).
  • It is under the feet of Christ that everything would be subjected: Heb 1:13, Heb 2:8-15, Heb 10:13, Acts 2:34f, Mk 16:19, Mat 11:27, Mat 22:44, Mat 26:64, Mat 28:18, Ps 8:6, Ps 110:1, Eph 1:22, 1 Cor 15:24-27, Rev 13:3, Rev 13:12-14, Rev 19:10, Is 60:14.
  • Treading winepresses
    • In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals. (Neh 13:15)
    • Which make oil within their walls, and tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst. Job 24:11)
  • Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat? (Isa 63:2)
  • I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. (Isa 63:3)
  • Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them, The LORD shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth. (Jer 25:30)
    • Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt. (Amo 9:13)
  • Tread down the wicked / enemies
    • And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth. (Isa 63:6)
    • Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place. (Job 40:12)
    • Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us. (Psa 44:5)
    • Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies. Psa 60:12)
