Often people believe that the number 7 is the number of perfection and / or completeness.  This creates confusion creating with the symbolic meaning of 10, which truly is completeness, which is different that perfection.  In addition to perfection, the symbolic meaning of 7 has an additional dimension concerning the purpose or will of a person. In the Old Testament, we find that the Hebrew word for oath or swearing is a cognate (or based upon) the number 7.  Therefore, the symbolic meaning of 7 is the perfection of purpose (e.g., will, oath, etc.), not just perfection.  Also, it is important to understand that the symbolic meaning of 7 includes either a good purpose (e.g., God’s will) or a bad purpose (e.g., Satan’s will).

The number 7 is used extensively in the Bible. It is even present in the creation of the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1 and 2).  We find that the 7th day was special.  It was the day in which God rested from all His works in creating (Gen 2:1-3).  We also see the number 7 repeated over and over in the Bible.  In many cases it is used in a symbolic manner.  For example, we find in the Book of Revelation, the following references to the number 7:

  • 7 churches – Rev 1:4, Rev 1:20, Rev 2-3
  • 7 Spirits – Rev 1:4, Rev 4:5
  • 7 candlesticks – Rev 1:20
  • 7 stars – Rev 1:20
  • 7 Lamps of fire – Rev 4:5
  • 7 seals on the scroll – Rev 5:1
  • 7 angels – Rev 8:2, Rev 15:1
  • 7 trumpets – Rev 8;2
  • 7 thunders – Rev 10:3-4
  • 7 heads – Rev 12:3, Rev 13:1, Rev 17:3
  • 7 plagues – Rev 15:6-8
  • 7 bowls (vials) – Rev 15:7
  • 7 mountains – Rev 17:9
  • 7 kings – Rev 17:10

The number 7 represents the Perfection of Purpose (whether good or bad).  In a good sense, God uses the number 7 to represent the perfection of His purpose in salvation.  For example the 7th day of rest is a type of salvation of God’s people.  7 is also extensively related to the feast days of the Old Testament, which all represent important truths about salvation and the work of God.

In a bad sense, we find that 7 also relates to things of Satan.  For example, the dragon of Revelation 12 and the scarlet-colored beast of Revelation both have 7 heads.  These beasts represent Satan and the purpose of his kingdom.  Also, in Revelation 13, we find that the beast (antichrist) also has 7 heads, referring once again to the evil purpose of that entity.

Another very compelling reason that 7 represents the purpose (a.k.a., will) of a person is that in the Old Testament, the Hebrew words for ‘swear’ and ‘oath’ are cognates of  the Hebrew word for 7. These words ‘swear’ and ‘oath’ literally mean ‘to seven oneself’.  We find confirmation of this, for example, in Jesus statement that one must forgive his brother not only seven times, but seventy times.  Please consider studying the following notes regarding 7 in the Bible.

For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife. Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
