The Symbolic Meaning of 4

The Symbolic Meaning of the Number 4 – Universal Extent

The purpose of this study is to thoroughly examine the Biblical use of the number 4. By doing so, it is evident that the number 4 is used throughout the Bible in a symbolic manner pointing to the ‘universal extent’ of the subject related to the number 4.  Please consider viewing the below video or visit the webpage on the Symbolic Meaning of 4 on this website.  For an analysis on the use of ¼ in the Bible, please see the Symbolic Meaning of Numbers page on this website.

Introduction / Prevalence of 4 in Revelation

In the Book of Revelation, we find the following uses of the number 4:

  • 4 beasts – Rev 4:6, Rev 4:8, Rev 5:6, Rev 5:8, Rev 5:14, Rev 6:1, Rev 6:6, Rev 7:11, Rev 14:3, Rev 15:7, Rev 19:4
  • 4th beast – flying eagle – Rev 4:7
  • 4th seal – Rev 6:7
  • 4th part of the earth – Rev 6:8
  • 4 angels – Rev 7:1-2, Rev 9:14-15
  • 4th angel – Rev 8:12, Rev 16:18
  • 4 horns of golden altar before the throne of God – Rev 9:13
  • 4 quarters of the earth – Rev 20:8
  • Foursquare – New Jerusalem – Rev 21:16
  • 4th stone – an emerald – Rev 21:19

God teaches us in Isaiah 55:11 that His word will not come back void and therefore, every word in the Bible is important.  God’s Word does not contain any incidental or unimportant information.  All of God’s Word is important.  All Scripture is given by inspiration and is profitable (2 Tim 3:16).

In order to understand the symbolic meaning of the number 4 in the Bible, this can only be achieved with comparing Scripture with Scripture (1 Cor 2:13).  Therefore, this study was assembled by analyzing all the Bible verses that use the number four (including the number 4 and the number one-fourth).  Other related numbers to four are 40, 400, 4000 which symbolically point to trials / testing.  But, in order to find out the most basic symbolic meaning of the number 4, the focus should be on analyzing the numbers 4 and one-fourth.  The key categories of usage of the number 4 in a symbolic manner are:

  • Universal extent of the creation (4 corners, 4 points of the compass, 4 quarters, 4 winds, etc.)
  • Universal extent of people (4 beasts, 4 kings, 4th generation, 4 divisions / groups of people)
  • Universal extent of the work of Cherubim and angels
  • Universal extent of 4 in the tabernacle, temple, law, etc.
  • Universal extent of time

The numbers four and one-fourth are categorized and listed below (with links to the actual Bible passages).  When all the usages of the number 4 and one-fourth are examined, the symbolism of 4 being ‘universal extent’ can be discerned.

Universal Extent of the Creation

So they walked to and fro through the earth.  (8)  Then cried he upon me, and spake unto me, saying, Behold, these that go toward the north country have quieted my spirit in the north country.

Rev 6:1-8  And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.  (2)  And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.  (3)  And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.  (4)  And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.  (5)  And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.  (6)  And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.  (7)  And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.  (8)  And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
