Gift of Prophecy

One of the 9 spiritual gifts listed in 1 Cor 12 is ‘prophecy’.  The Pentecostals / Charismatics believe that this gift (Greek: charisma) is a special (supernatural) ability given to certain Pentecostals / Charismatics.  This gift is similar to other charisma in 1 Cor 12:4-11 such as speaking in tongues, supernatural healings, words of wisdom and knowledge, discerning of spirits and miracles (power).  The gift of prophecy is the ability to receive direct revelation from God and share it with other people.  Prophets were very prominent in both the Old Testament as well as the Apostolic Church. Also, Jesus Christ is the Prophet since He is the Word of God and it is by His Spirit that the Bible was delivered to God’s people.  It is true that in the Apostolic Church, this was a necessary gift that was used to edify the Apostolic church until the Bible (New Testament) was formed. Upon completion of the New Testament by the Apostolic Church this gift of prophecy ceased as well as the other supernatural gifts.  All these gifts were important witnesses of the Apostolic Church and served to spread the Gospel in the 1st Century A.D.  These gifts also have important symbolic, spiritual truths as well. In essence, all true Christians today are prophets when they share the hope of eternal life with others.  People today who claim to be prophets receiving direct revelation from God are actual false prophets.  In the Book of Revelation, God warns us of the False Prophet during the Great Tribulation.  This two horned lamb is actually a symbol of the leadership of the end-time false Christian churches and parachurches known as Babylon.

Church Kills the Prophets

  • Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.  (Mat 5:12)
  • O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets, and stone them which are sent unto thee … (Mat 23:37)
  • O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!  (Luk 13:34)
  • Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute: That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation. (Luk 11:47-51)
  • Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.  (Luk 6:23)
  • Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:  (1Th 2:15)
  • You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit: as your fathers did, so do ye. Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers (Act 7:51-52)
  • Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.  (Rom 11:3)
  • Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.  (Jas 5:10)
  • And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth. (Rev 11:10)
  • And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. (Rev 11:18)
  • For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy. (Rev 16:6)
  • Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her. (Rev 18:20)
  • And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth. (Rev 18:24)

Old Testament Prophets Function

  • Prophets faithfully bring word of God – 1 Pet 1:10-12, Lk 24:44-47, Acts 3:21, Acts 10:43, Lk 1:70, 2 Pet 1:21, 2 Pet 3:2, Rev 18:20, Rev 22:6
    • Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. (1Pe 1:10-12)
    • And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (Luk 24:44-47)
    • Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.  (Act 3:21)
    • And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. (Act 10:42-43)
    • As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant (Luk 1:70-72)
    • And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. (2Pe 1:18-21)
    • That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:  (2Pe 3:2)
    • Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.  (Rev 18:20)
    • And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.  (Rev 22:6)
  • Other Key verses on the function of a prophet:
    • Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.  (Jer 18:18)
    • God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,  (Heb 1:1)
    • Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.  (Jas 5:10)
    • That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:  (2Pe 3:2)
    • Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;  (Eph 3:5)
  • Prophets (Old Testament) proclaimed (witnessed) Christ – Acts 3:18, Acts 3:24, Act 17:2-3, Act 26:22-23, Act 28:23, Luk 24:24-27, Luk 24:44, 1Co 15:3-4, 1Pe 1:10-11, Rev 19:10, John 5:39-40, John 5:46, John 1:45, Acts 10:43, Acts 13:27-30, Acts 26:22
    • And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.  (Luk 24:27)
    • And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures (Luk 24:44-45)
    • For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.  (Joh 5:46)

John, the Baptist – the Last Old Testament Prophet

  • But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. (Luk 7:26-28)
  • And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children. (Mat 11:7-19)

Jesus as the Prophet

  • Jesus foreshadowed as the Prophet – Deut 18:15-20, Acts 3:22-23, Acts 7:37:
    • The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken…I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.   (Deu 18:15, 18-19)
    • For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.  (Acts 3:22-23, see also Acts 7:37)
  • Jesus was the Prophet:
    • …Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.  (Lk 24:19-20)
    • Nevertheless I must walk to day, and tomorrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.  (Lk 13:33)

Prophet – Jesus as the Word of God (Bible)

To believe Jesus is the Christ is to believe the Jesus is the Prophet (Acts 3:22-23, Lk 24:19, Lk 13:33), the Word of God (the Bible):

  • In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.  (John 1:1, John 1:14)
  • Jesus told us that His words are spirit and they are life:
  • It is the spirit that quickens; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.  (John 6:63)

We also know that God sent prophets to proclaim the Word of God to His people – Acts 3:18, Acts 3:24, Act 17:2-3, Act 26:22-23, Act 28:23, Luk 24:24-27, Luk 24:44, 1Co 15:3-4, 1Pe 1:10-11, Rev 19:10, John 5:39-40, John 5:46, John 1:45, Acts 10:43, Acts 13:27-30, Acts 26:22.

Because Jesus Christ is the Word of God, it is not surprising that the prophets of the Old Testament spoke by the Spirit of Christ:

  • Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Spirit sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. (1 Pe 1:10-12)
  • We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.  (2 Pe 1:19-21)

It is also important to note that salvation comes through the Word of God (Jesus as the Prophet):

  • So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Rom 10:17)
  • How are God’s people saved and are made holy:
  • As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby (1 Pe 2:2)
  • …when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually works also in you that believe.  (1 Th 2:13)
  • Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. (John 17:17)

Apostolic Church Prophets

The following prophets in the Apostolic Church are specifically recognized (many others were also prophets – 1 Cor 12-14):

  • John, the Apostle – Rev 1:3, Rev 10:11, Rev 22:7, Rev 22:9-10, Rev 22:18-19
  • Agabus – Acts 11:28, Acts 21:10
  • Barnabas – Acts 13:1
  • Simeon – Acts 13:1
  • Niger – Acts 13:1
  • Lucius of Cyrene – Acts 13:1
  • Manaen – Acts 13:1
  • Saul (Paul), the Apostle – Acts 13:1, Acts 9:20, 1 Cor 13:2
  • Judas – Acts 15:32
  • Silas – Acts 15:32
  • Philip’s 4 daughters – Acts 21:9
  • Ephesians baptized in the Holy Spirit – Acts 19:6

In addition, it is evident that there were many prophets during the early church at Corinth:

  • Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. (1Co 11:4)
  • But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. (1Co 11:5)
  • To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: (1Co 12:10)

Gifts (charisma) of the Spirit Passages – New Testament

1 Cor 12

  • Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these works that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. (1Co 12:4-11)
  • And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way. (1Co 12:28-31)

Eph 4

  • And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ (Eph 4:11-15)

Ro 12

  • For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. (Rom 12:3-8)

1 Pet 4

  • As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. (1Pe 4:10-11)

Signs and Wonders have Ceased

Please visit the ‘signs and wonders have ceased’ page on this website.

  • Signs and wonders were an ‘Apostolic’ gift during the 1st Century A.D. – Mat 10:1, etc.
    • An Apostle is a ‘Sent one’ who was a first hand witness of Jesus Christ – 1 Cor 15:7-9
    • Signs and wonders validated apostolic authority – 2 Cor 12:12, Heb 2:3-4
    • Signs and wonders were as also symbols of spiritual truth (Gospel) – Ro 15:19, etc.
  • Signs and wonders (e.g., tongues) ceased after:
    • Word of God completed by Apostles – 2 Pet 3:2, Jude 17, Eph 3:3-5, 1 Cor 15:6-8, Rev 22:18, Pro 30:6, etc.

Bible is Complete

  • For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. (Rev 22:18-19)
  • Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
  • Deut 4:2
  • What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it. (Deut 12:32)
  • Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. (Pr 30:6)
  • … Forever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.  (Psa 119:89)

It should be obvious from these Scriptures that we are commanded not to add to or remove from the Word of God. If we believe that the Bible is the Word of God, we should, therefore, be very careful to not tamper with it. However, we live in a day where there all types of additions and removals are done to the Bible. We find that many add to the Word of God by claiming that their visions and dreams were sent to them from God. Also, the phenomenon prophecy and speaking in tongues are also additions to the Bible. More subtle additions would include Christian psychology, traditions of man, scholarly studies that go beyond the teachings in the Bible are additions to the Bible. Also, in some parts of Christendom, other books (the Apocrypha) are added to the Bible. These hidden books in no way meet the test of being faithful to the rest of God’s Word.

The Bible is removed from by teaching false doctrine. Errors concerning what the Bible teaches obviously remove the truth from the Bible. As we saw earlier, various textual criticisms also remove from the Word of God. These scholars who propound that the Bible is not completely the Word of God, but has been revised and re-written by various editors are removing from the Word of God. Also, many people compromise the Word of God by not preaching the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27-31, 2 Tim 4:3). In order to maintain supposed harmony, they compromise and squelch the more offensive parts of the Bible such as speaking of man’s sin or the fact of hell and damnation.

Jesus is the Word of God (John 1:1).  His words have been divinely captured in the Bible and preserved for us.  Once the Bible was completed, there is no more other divine communications (special revelation) through prophecy, tongues, words of wisdom / knowledge, etc.
