False Signs & Wonders

Pentecostals and Charismatics are defined by signs and wonders.  However, their ‘signs and wonders’ are false. Also, false signs and wonders are a prominent feature of the Great Tribulation.  But, even now in the Apostasy in which we currently live, we see these false signs and wonders.

Pentecostals and Charismatics falsely teach that signs and wonders are evidence of the ‘Baptism in the Holy Spirit’.  This is incorrectly understood a higher blessing given only to select Christians (i.e., themselves).  They falsely teach that this ‘Baptism in the Holy Spirit’ was poured out on Pentecost to empower the church with the ability to perform signs and wonders.  Many of them wrongly believe that those who practice signs and wonders are part of the end-time ‘latter rain’. Typically, Pentecostals and Charismatics believe that the initial evidence of being ‘Baptized in the Holy Spirit’ is speaking in tongues. They teach that other signs will also be evident as well such as supernatural healings, casting out demons, slain in the spirit, words of wisdom and knowledge, dreams and visions, etc.  Also, most of them wrongly teach a ‘prosperity gospel’, where they claim their destiny on this earth includes riches, abundant material possessions, happiness, power and a trouble free life. A key part of this false teaching is the need for ‘tithing’ in order to plant a seed faith to bring about this prosperity.  See other webpages for more details on the following topics or continue with the You Tube video link below of continue to the study that follows:

Definitions of ‘Pentecostal’ and ‘Charismatic’

Pentecostalism

  • Pentecostalismor Classical Pentecostalism is a Protestant Christian movement that emphasizes direct personal experience of God through baptism with the Holy Spirit. The term Pentecostal is derived from Pentecost, an event that commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the followers of Jesus Christ, and the speaking in “foreign” tongues as described in the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles … Comprising over 700 denominations and many independent churches, Pentecostalism is highly decentralized. There is no central authority, but many denominations are affiliated with the Pentecostal World Fellowship. There are over 279 million classical Pentecostals worldwide, and the movement is growing in many parts of the world …

False Signs and Wonders – Great Tribulation

  • For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. (Mat 24:21-24)
  • And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not: For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. (Mark 13:21-22)
  • And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (2 Th 2:8-12)
  • And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. (Rev 13:11-14)
  • And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. (Rev 16:13-14)
  • And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. (Rev 19:20)

False Christs and False Prophets

As we understand from Mat 24:24 and Mk 13:22, false christs and false prophets will show great sings and wonders:

Therefore, it is very important to be able to recognize what false christs and false prophets are. To understand what a ‘false christ’ is, one must understand what ‘Christ’ means. Once the term ‘Christ’ is understood, then the meaning of a ‘false christ’ (also known as an ‘antichrist’).  Jesus taught that whoever was not for Him, was against Him (Mat 12:30, Lk 11:23).  A false Christ is one who is against the truth that Jesus is the Prophet, the Priest and the King.  This threefold office of Christ (Messiah) reflects these three important truths about Jesus Christ:

  1. Prophet – the absolute truth about God is found in the Word of God, which is the Bible. Jesus Christ is the Word of God. One must be a disciple of Jesus Christ through the Bible.
  2. Priest – Jesus Christ is the High Priest and by His sacrifice of Himself is the only way to salvation. There is no salvation outside of Jesus Christ.
  3. King – Jesus Christ is the sovereign King. A true Christian will have an on-going desire to be obedient and submissive to Jesus Christ as the Word of God.

It is essential that one believe that Jesus is the Christ. It is imperative to our salvation. One cannot be saved if they do not believe in the Christ. The word Christ (Messiah) means to be anointed or rubbed with oil. In the Bible, there are three primary officers who were anointed: Prophet, Priest and King. Jesus is the fulfillment of these three offices. Jesus is the Prophet in that He is the Word of God (the Bible). The Spirit of Jesus Christ wrote the Bible through men. Jesus Christ was the fulfillment of the High Priest in that He offered His blood once forever for His people. He is the only way to salvation. Jesus Christ is also the King in that He must be followed and obeyed. If one does not believe that 1) Jesus Christ is, in essence, the Bible, 2) Jesus Christ is the Priest, which is the only way to salvation, and 3) that Jesus Christ must be obeyed, then that person is not saved. All three offices of Jesus Christ must be believed. An antichrist is a person that does not believe that Jesus is the Christ (i.e., the Prophet, Priest and King). In other words, the three most basic believes to be saved is that Jesus is found in the entire Bible and the Bible speaks of Him and He inspired it. Also, they must believe that He is the only way to salvation and finally that He is the LORD of Lords, and KING of Kings.

In order to understand what a ‘false prophet’ is, one must understand what a prophet is.  The Greek word for ‘prophet’ literally means to speak of things that will come.  This word and its cognates occur about 200 times in the New Testament.  The following Scriptures emphasize that a prophet faithfully suffer in the bringing of God’s word involving future events:

  • God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets  (Heb 1:1)
  • Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.  (Jas 5:10)
  • That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:  (2Pe 3:2)
  • Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;  (Eph 3:5)

A ‘false prophet’ is one that does not bring forth the truth of the Word of God. A false prophet will teach and proclaim falsely about future events such as the nature of salvation, the second coming of Christ, the millennium, the order of end time events, the nature of eternity, etc.

Use of the Word ‘Miracle’ in the Bible

In the King James Version of the Bible, the word ‘miracle’ is used in 31 verses in the New Testament and 5 verses in the Old Testament.  In the New Testament, all 31 occurrences of the English word ‘miracle’ is actually either the Greek word for sign (semeion, G4592) or the Greek word for power (dunamis, G1411).  In the Old Testament, the English word ‘miracle’ is either the Hebrew word for wonder (mopheth, H4159), the Hebrew word for sign (oth, H226) or the Hebrew word for marvelous (pala, H6381).  Therefore, when the English word ‘miracle’ is used in the Bible, it is more appropriate to regard it as either a sign, wonder or a marvel depending on the Greek or Hebrew word used.
