False Prophet (Lamb with 2 Horns)

The False Prophet is discussed in Revelation 13. This entity is symbolized by a lamb with two horns and speaks as a dragon. There is a Satanic trinity symbolized in the book of Revelation as the dragon (Satan), the Beast (antichrist) and the false prophet. The false prophet’s primary focus is to bring worship To the antichirst (a.k.a., the beast, little horn, king of the north, etc.).  The false prophet seeks to accomplish his goal by three methods:

  1. Signs and wonders (which results in a judgment on those who are deceived)
  2. The making of an image of the beast which is to be worshipped
  3. Not allowing people to ‘buy or sell’ (merchandise) without the mark of the beast, the name of the beast or the number of his name (666)

The Mark, the Name of the Beast and the Number of his Name

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

(Revelation 13:16-18)

13:16

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads

  • All unsaved receive a mark in right hand or in foreheads
  • Right hand – represents the control of will of a person
    • To be given into the hand of another meant that the other person now had control. Many times, when a nation lost to another in battle, it was referred to as being delivered into the hand of the victor (see Jud 11:32, 13:1, 15:12‑13, 16:23‑24, 1 Chr 14:10, 1 Ki 15:18, 2 Sam 8:1, Ps 37:33, 71:4, 106:41). Therefore, it is clear that the hand in the Bible can be viewed as referring to the will of an individual. If one nation lost to another, they were now under the control or will of the victor.
    • God’s had, notably His right hand, we see that it refers to His bringing about salvation for His people.
      • Ps 44:3 – when referring to Israel being delivered from Egypt, we find that it was not by their own sword did Israel possess the promised land, but it was by God’s right hand, and His arm and the light of His presence that He did favor them. In other words, the salvation that is typified by being brought into the promised land (see Heb 3-4), is referred to as God’s work by His right hand.
      • Ps 20:6 – the saving strength of His right hand. In fact, there are many other places where God’s right hand points to the will of God in salvation ‑ Ps 44:3, Jud 7:6, Ps 10:12, 20:6-8, 28:5, 78:54, 89:21, 98:1-4, 106:41‑42, 136:12, Ex 13:16, 15:6,16‑17, Jer 18:1‑6, 32:21,Ez 3:14, Ex 6:6, Acts 11:21, Lk 1:66.
  • Foreheads – represent where mind is
    • Where saved were marked in Ez 9:4,6
    • Foreheads – where God’s seal is – Rev 7:3, 9:4, 13:16, 14:1,9, 17:5, 20:4, 22:4
      • Sealed with Holy Spirit  – John 3:33, Eph 1:13-14, 2 Cor 1:22, Eph 4:30
    • Ezekiel’s forehead made like flint – Ez 3:8-9
    • Saved marked – Ez 9:4
    • Where phylacteries were worn – see Deut 6:8, 11:18, Ex 13:9,16, Mat 23:5
    • Aaron’s forehead – ‘Holy to the Lord’ – Ex 28:38
    • Satan marks his people – Rev 13:18
    • Unsaved – minds are at enmity w/ God – 1 Tim 6:5, 2 Tim 3:8, Col 1:21, 2 Cor 3:14-4:6
    • Saved have the mind of Christ – 1 Cor 2:16, Heb 8:10 (see Heb 10:16-17, Jer 31:34), 2 Cor 3:3, Col 3:9-10, 2 Cor 1:21-22, 2 Tim 1:7. 2 Pet 3:1, Ro 8:5
    • Saved must strive to keep their minds on Christ – Eph 5:18, Mat 22:37 (w/ Deut 6:4-5, Lk 10:27, Mk 12:30), 1 Pet 2:2, 1 Thess 2:13, Eph 1:15-19, 4:13,23, 2 Pet 1:5-8,3:18, Phil 1:9-11, 2:5,4:7-8, Col 1:9-11 ,2:3, 3:2, James 3:13, 1 Pet 1:13, Ro 12:2
  • Mark – see also Rev 14:9,11, 15:2, 16:2, 19:20, 20:4
    • Mark set upon Cain – Gen 4:15
    • Commanded not to print any marks on body – Lev 19:28
    • Represents that Satan influences the mind of unsaved – held in captive to sin – 2 Tim 2:24-26, but mankind willingly submit themselves to servitude since people like sin (Ro 39-23, Jer 17:9, etc).  Because people are sinful, their minds are at enmity with God (Ro 8:1-9, 1 Tim 6:5, 2 Tim 3:8, Col 1:21, 2 Cor 3:14-4:6, James 4:4). People are children of Satan – 1 John 3:8-10, Mat 13:38, John 8:44)
    • Mark of Ezekiel 9:
      • And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof. And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house. (Eze 9:4-6)

13:17

And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name

  • Buy and sell (merchandising religion and the Gospel)- see notes on 11:2-4 – 2 Pet 2:3, Mk 11:15, Mat 21:12-16, Lk 19:45-47, Jer 7:11, 2 Cor 2:17, 1 Thess 2:5, James 4:13, John 2, Zech 14:21, Mat 13:45, Rev 18:3-23, Mat 22:5, 2:12-17, Hos 12:7, James 2:17, Deut 21:14, 24:3, Ez 26:12, 28:16, Is 23:18, 45:14, etc
    • Redemption – buy out of marketplace – see Rev 5:9 notes
  • Mark – see notes on Rev 13:16
  • Name of the beast – name represents all that a person is (for names of Satan – see Rev 9:11, accuser, deceiver, adversary, etc)
  • Number of his name – This number represents all that Satan is (see Rev 13:18)

13:18

Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six

  • Wisdom intimately connected with the Word of God, Job 28, Pr 1:2,7, 2:2-10, 3:13,19, 4:4-11,1 Chr 22:12, 1 Cor 1:17-2:13, 2 Cor 1:12, Eph 1:8,17, 3:10, Col 1:9,28, 2:3,23, 3:16, James 1:5, 3:15-17, 2 Pet 3:15, see notes on 5:12
  • Hath understanding – All Christians can discern spiritual truth with Holy Spirit – 1 Cor 2:14-15, Mat 13:10-16, 1 Cor 2:6-16, 1 John 4:6, 2 Cor 3:12-4:4, Heb 10:16, Jer 31:33-34, 2 John 1-2, Col 3:9-10, John 10:3, 2 Tim 1:7, John 2:26-27, Ps 19:7-8, 25:12-14, 32:8, Luke 11:33-36, Phil 3:15, Mk 5:15, 2 Thess 2:11, John 8:47, 18:37
  • Count (calculate, Gr: psephizo, 2 occurrences – Lk 14:28, see also Acts 19:19) – to carefully add up or calculate the cost of something) – carefully analyze and understand the work of Satan so as not to be misled since Satan is an angel of light (2 Cor 11:14-15) and a deceiver.
  • Number of a man – see Rev 21:17, that which represents Satan is closely linked to what men do (nature of sin)
  • 666 – Three sixes – Satanic trinity of Rev 13 (Dragon, Beast, False Prophet)
    • 6 – the number of work – e.g. – 6 days of creation – Gen 1, Ex 20:11, 20:9, 23:10, Lk 23:44, John 19:14-18, Mat 20:5, Acts 10:9

And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.

(Num 22:20)

And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

(Num 22:21)

(Num 24:15)

(Num 31:8)

Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD.

(Num 31:16)

Because they met you not with bread and with water in the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; and because they hired against thee Balaam the son of Beor of Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse thee.

(Deu 23:4)

Nevertheless the LORD thy God would not hearken unto Balaam; but the LORD thy God turned the curse into a blessing unto thee, because the LORD thy God loved thee.

(Deu 23:5)

Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among them that were slain by them.

But I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.

(Jos 24:10)

Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.

O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.

(Mic 6:5)

Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

(2Pe 2:15)

Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.

(Jud 1:11)

But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.

(Rev 2:14)

Jezebel – a Type of the False Prophet

And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.

(1Ki 16:31)

For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

(1Ki 18:4)

Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD’S prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

(1Ki 18:13)

Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table.

(1Ki 18:19)

And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

(1Ki 19:1)

Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.

(1Ki 19:2)

But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread?

(1Ki 21:5)

And Jezebel his wife said unto him, Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and eat bread, and let thine heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.

(1Ki 21:7)

And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them, and as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them.

(1Ki 21:11)

Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead.

(1Ki 21:14)

And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead.

(1Ki 21:15)

And of Jezebel also spake the LORD, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.

(1Ki 21:23)

But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the LORD, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.

(1Ki 21:25)

And thou shalt smite the house of Ahab thy master, that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the LORD, at the hand of Jezebel.

(2Ki 9:7)

And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel, and there shall be none to bury her. And he opened the door, and fled.

(2Ki 9:10)

And it came to pass, when Joram saw Jehu, that he said, Is it peace, Jehu? And he answered, What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?

(2Ki 9:22)

And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window.

(2Ki 9:30)

Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he said, This is the word of the LORD, which he spake by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel:

(2Ki 9:36)

And the carcase of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel; so that they shall not say, This is Jezebel.

(2Ki 9:37)

Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.

(Rev 2:20)

The Foolish Shepherd of Zech 11

Open thy doors, O Lebanon, that the fire may devour thy cedars. Howl, fir tree; for the cedar is fallen; because the mighty are spoiled: howl, O ye oaks of Bashan; for the forest of the vintage is come down. There is a voice of the howling of the shepherds; for their glory is spoiled: a voice of the roaring of young lions; for the pride of Jordan is spoiled. Thus saith the LORD my God; Feed the flock of the slaughter; Whose possessors slay them, and hold themselves not guilty: and they that sell them say, Blessed be the LORD; for I am rich: and their own shepherds pity them not. For I will no more pity the inhabitants of the land, saith the LORD: but, lo, I will deliver the men every one into his neighbour’s hand, and into the hand of his king: and they shall smite the land, and out of their hand I will not deliver them. And I will feed the flock of slaughter, even you, O poor of the flock. And I took unto me two staves; the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bands; and I fed the flock. Three shepherds also I cut off in one month; and my soul lothed them, and their soul also abhorred me. Then said I, I will not feed you: that that dieth, let it die; and that that is to be cut off, let it be cut off; and let the rest eat every one the flesh of another. And I took my staff, even Beauty, and cut it asunder, that I might break my covenant which I had made with all the people. And it was broken in that day: and so the poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it was the word of the LORD. And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD. Then I cut asunder mine other staff, even Bands, that I might break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel. And the LORD said unto me, Take unto thee yet the instruments of a foolish shepherd. For, lo, I will raise up a shepherd in the land, which shall not visit those that be cut off, neither shall seek the young one, nor heal that that is broken, nor feed that that standeth still: but he shall eat the flesh of the fat, and tear their claws in pieces. Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.
