The Apostasy First

The Bible teaches that there will be an ‘Apostasy’ (or falling away) in the last days.

apostasy now

This Apostasy occurs first just before the Great Tribulation (2 Thess 2:3).  That is, the Apostasy occurs before the revealing of the ‘man of sin’ (a.k.a., the antichrist).  The revealing of the antichrist (as well as the establishment of the abomination of desolation) marks the beginning of the ‘little season’ of Great Tribulation on God’s people (Rev 13, Rev 20 and Mat 24, etc.).  This ‘little season’ of the Great Tribulation coincides with the loosing of Satan (Rev 20).  Satan had been bound in the bottomless pit during the church age (i.e., the Millennium). The Last Day is immediately after the Great Tribulation. The following chart illustrates the order of end-time events:

Apostasy literally means ‘a standing off’.  Although there are 20 characteristics of the Apostasy (see below), the Apostasy can be summed more simply as a widespread rebellion of ‘nominal’ Christianity from worship and interest in the true God and the Bible.  Of course, true Christians can never depart from the faith of Jesus Christ since they are eternally secure (Jude 24, John 10:29, Phil 1:6).  The key Bible passages that point to the conditions of the Apostasy (just before the Great Tribulation) are 2 Thess 2:3 and 2 Tim 3:1-13.  Other passages such as  2 Tim 4:3-4, 2 Pet 3:3-7, Jude 17-19, 1 Tim 4:1-3 and Acts 20:28-30 also reflect that conditions of the church were to degrade after the apostolic age, but not to the extent found in the apostasy. Conditions described in all these passages will exist during the ‘Apostasy’, but are neatly enveloped by 2 Tim 3:1-13, which is the basis of this study.

There exists data that indicates that a falling away from God and His truth is already occurring.  Below is one example:

What is Apostasy (2 Th 2:3)?

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition.  (2Th 2:3)

Before the revealing of the ‘man of sin’ (a.k.a., the antichrist), the Bible teaches that there will first be an apostasy.  But, what is an apostasy.  Based on the word study that follows, an apostasy is a ‘standing off’.  The same word is also translated as ‘divorce’ in Mat 5:31, Mat 19:7 and Mk 10:4.  Also, in Acts 21:21, the same word is used for people who depart from the law of Moses.  In many other places, the cognate for word translated as a falling away is translated as a ‘departure’.

To better understand what this standing away from God is, consider the following passage:

  • Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. (1Ti 4:1-3)

In this passage, the word ‘depart’ is based on a Greek cognate for ‘standing away (G868 – see below word study).  Although 1 Tim 4:1-3 would apply to the entire church age following the apostolic period, the use of the word ‘depart’ helps to identify the nature of apostasy.  In 1 Tim 4:1-3, the context would suggest a departure from the truth of God.

Therefore, In the context of 2 Thess 2:3, it is safe to conclude that the falling away (apostasy) involves a standing away from God that includes a departure by ‘nominal Christianity’ from fellowship with God and His people as well as a departure from the Word of God, resulting in unholy behavior.  This unholy behavior includes 20 symptoms described below.

This apostasy sets the stage for the revealing of the man of sin (the Antichrist).  However, true Christians will never depart from the faith of Christ since they are eternally secure. Below are key passages that underscore that God’s people are eternally secure in Christ:

  • Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,  (Jud 1:24)
  • My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.  (Joh 10:29)
  • Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:  (Php 1:6)
  • What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?  (Rom 8:31)
  • Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,  (Eph 3:20)
  • And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.  (2Ti 4:18)
  • Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.  (Psa 73:24)
  • For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.  (Psa 37:28)
  • The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.  (Psa 138:8)
  • For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.  (Php 2:13)
  • For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.  (2Ti 1:12)
