Anointing Oil for Healing?

Many people believe that church leaders have the power to physically heal people with anointing oil.  This is prevalent in Pentecostal churches. But, many charismatics in other mainline and independent churches also believe in this anointing oil.  This belief is primarily based on an incorrect interpretation of James 5:13-16.  On the surface, this passage indicates that oil was used in the early church to physically heal people. However, just like other supernatural spiritual gifts, this gift was limited to the Apostolic Age, prior to completion of the New Testament.  But, this passage does indeed have an important spiritual meaning involving spiritual healing.  Please click on the below link to learn about the true meaning of James 5:13-16:

Sickness not Due to Sin

  • And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. (Joh 9:1-3)
  • Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. (Joh 11:3-4)

  • Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.  (1Ti 5:23)
  • It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities. For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me. And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. (2Co 12:1-10)
  • But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. So then death worketh in us, but life in you. (2Co 4:7-12)

Sickness due to Sin

  • For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. (1Co 11:29-31)

  • Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.  (Psa 107:17)
  • And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. (Heb 12:5-11)
  • And Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife bare unto David, and it was very sick. David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. (2Sa 12:15-16)

There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me. My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness. I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh. I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart. (Psa 38:1-8)

And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed. Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, beside them that died about the matter of Korah. And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the plague was stayed. (Num 16:46-50)

Anointing – The Meaning of Christ

To fully understand the doctrine of Christ, it would be appropriate to study the appropriately 700 occurrences of the words in the Old and New Testaments that related to Christ / Messiah.  The reader is encouraged to spend time in the undertaking of this important spiritual task.  However, below is a brief summary of the significance of these words:

New Testament:

In the occurrences of the word ‘Christ’ in the New Testament, the title Christ is usually used in conjunction with ‘Jesus’.  However, from most occurrences, we cannot immediately gain any additional information on what the function of Christ is. However, we find the following references concerning Jesus as being the Anointed One:

  • Lk 4:18 – Jesus was anointed to preach the Gospel to the poor.
  • Acts 4:27 – Jesus, the Holy Child was anointed
  • Acts 10:38 – Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit
  • Heb 1:9 (quote of Psalm 45:7) – God has anointed Jesus with the oil of gladness

In the above verses, we find a close affinity between the term anointing and oil.  The oil is a symbol for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Old Testament:

When we examine the Old Testament, the Bible teaches us that the three offices that were ‘anointeed’ were prophets, priests and kings.  It is important to understand that the Messiah (Anointed One) was talked about in the Old Testament.  References to the coming Messiah can be seen in the following verses:  Dan 9:24, 25, 26, Hab 3:13, Ps 2:2, 20:6, 84:9, 89:38, 51, 84:9,  1 Sam 2:35. For example:

  • Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.  (Psa 2:1-3)
  • Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.  (Act 4:25-26)

When we study all the verses in the Old Testament that refer to those who were anointed we find that there were three Old Testament functions that involved anointing:  Prophet, Priest and King.  In fact, most of the occurrences of the references to ‘anointing’ involve these three offices.  There are some references to the anointing of the various vessels of the tabernacle, alter and the vessels of worship, but these can likely be related to the fact that Christians are anointed (Lev 8:10-12, Num 7:1, 10, 84, 88, Ex 29:22, 36, 30:26, 40:9-11, Amos 6:6).  The following verses are offered for the reader to further study the three offices of the Messiah (anointed offices):

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.   (Deu 18:15, 18-19)
    • For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.  (Acts 3:22-23, see also Acts 7:37)
  • Jesus was a Prophet:
